electrofishing |
The Maine
Atlantic Salmon Commission (ASC) maintains electrofishing data and survey
locations in a linked Microsoft Access - ArcGIS database. Data assembled
includes those collected by the ASC, NOAA Fisheries, and U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service crews. The database contains data on individual fish
captured on ASC electrofishing trips on the Sheepscot River from 1958 to 2003
with one record for each data trip and salmon captured and records for other
fish species captured and abundance or length weight data where available. A
total of 678 surveys are contained in the database. The database includes
ASC's calculated densities of Atlantic salmon parr and young-of-the-year for
86 surveys. |

their tributaries in late September 1997 by the Maine Board of Pesticides
Control. Rivers included Dennys, Ducktrap, East Machias, Macmas, Narraguagus,
Pleasant, and Sheepscot Rivers. Samples were analyzed for 33 pesticide
chemicals and degradation (metabolic breakdown) products. Hexazinone, the
only chemical detected, was present in 19 (29.4%) of the 64 samples
collected. Data are from Chizmas (1999). |

NOAA_DSMT |
downstream migrant trapping |
The NOAA Fisheries operates
rotary screw traps to capture downstream migrant Atlantic salmon smolts each
spring on the Sheepscot River just below Head Tide dam in Alna. One trap was
operated in 2001, and two were operated in 2002. The dam passes water through
two chutes, so when only one trap is operating, only half the flow of the
river is flowing by the trap. Trap operators attempted to catch the largest
number of smolts possible while minimizing the number of shad captured. This
was done by adjusting the traps' positioning when large numbers of shad were
caught. |

From 1956-1959, the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service operated a weir below Head Tide Dam on the Sheepscot
River to study Atlantic salmon. They trapped, counted, and marked both
upstream-migrating adults and downstream-migrating juveniles. Methods,
results and discussion of the project are written up in a report by Stickney
(1959), and data from that report were included in KRIS Sheepscot. Charts
were built in KRIS for adult and juvenile salmon counts at weir. Original
